  1. Sandra Tindle says:

    1. Some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory because the first part of John’s gospel describes the miracles and signs that Jesus gave that proved he was God, and the second part of the book is Jesus explaining his glory and power.
    2. I do not think that John 1 was part of the original gospel that John wrote. The reason for this is because John 1 talks about John in third person, and follows John around, while the rest of the gospel follows Jesus. However, John 21 seems to fit the rest of the gospel, telling the story of Jesus and his interactions with his disciples and others.
    3. John helps me believe because it gives specific examples of Jesus being who he claimed to be, and gives an accurate account of his life.
    4. The Holy Spirit plays a prominent role in my life. I try to always listen to the Holy Spirit when making decisions or when something comes up that doesn’t feel ‘right’. The Holy Spirit is also the only way that I can read, understand, and share the Bible.
    5. The book of John can encourage me in my prayer life by showing me the example that Jesus set and the miraculous things that he did, which then makes me realize that I can’t be like Jesus on my own will, I need to constantly pray and ask God to help me become more like him.

  2. Kristin Goffinet says:

    1) I think they divide it this way because in the first 11 chapters, John outlines seven carefully chosen miracles of Jesus, and in the second half of the book, Jonh describes the Passion week of Christ.
    2) Yes, I believe that chapter 1 and 21 are part of the original gospel. Chapter one is different in the fact that it starts with describing Jesus as the Word and the author refers to himself in the third person, but then in verse 19, John begins to tell the story of Jesus’ life in narrative form, beginning with his baptism. John 21 seems to fit the rest of the book nicely within the context of the book, and John refers to himself in the first person.
    3) The book of John helps me believe for several reasons. First of all, I love the account of Nicodemus in chapter 3, which is an example of Jesus sharing the gospel plainly with a man who was doubting his existance. Also, the desccription of Christ’s incarnation in John 1 is very powerful to me.
    4) I am trying to make sure that I am allowing the Holy Spirit to continually take over more and more of my life, but I know that there are many days that I don’t look to the Holy Spirit for guidance, and I attempt to “go it alone.”
    5) I am always inspired by Jesus’ prayer in John 17 for his disciples and all believers, as well for himself. This prayer is a beautiful model for how we should come before our Heavenly Father in prayer!

  3. Amy Kringle says:

    1. The first part of John is miracles that show that show who Jesus is, while in the second part he gives testimony and teaching revealing that he is of God.
    2. It almost seems like Ch. one is a summary of who Jesus is, before he gets into actual stories of what he has done. I think that it was added after the book was written but ch. 21 seems to fit in with the rest of John.
    3. John helps me believe because over and over again in the book, it shows his interactions with people. People always have a reaction to his actions or words. In this I am reminded that no action or response to who Jesus claims to be, is the same as denying him. It reminds me to fully put my trust in him.
    4. I know that the Holy Spirit plays a role in my life because he helps me to understand the Father. I guess I don’t daily meditate on the Spirit, but I know that he is always present because otherwise I would be unfaithful and would not understand scripture or how to pray.
    5. I know for certain that I am no more godly than Jesus, and Jesus prayed to his Father, so how much more should I be praying to him!

  4. rebecca Langer says:

1.I think some theologians divide John into a Book of Signs and the Book of Glory because the first part of the book shows Jesus’s miracles, then later he shows his glory through statements and things he does.
2.I don’t see why John 1 and 21 would not be in the original manuscript. John 1 does speak in a more allegorical sense and John 21 speaks of the future of the church. I think they still reflect the rest of John though.
3.John does help me believe because he gives an intimate picture of Jesus and really closes in on some conversations that give great insights into Jesus. I think of the Upper Room discourse.
4.I would like to think that he plays a prominent role in my life. I know that he convicts me of many things. I think that I need to make sure that I am listening to him, however.
5.The Book of John is very encouraging in my prayer life because I know that Jesus is my high priest. He intercedes for me. 🙂

  5. HeeJin,Choi says:

1.Why do you think some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory?
    – When we read the book of John, we step into the divine nature of Jesus in the beginning from the very beginning verse, and His divinity as a son of God and God Himself is emphasized most than the three books of gospel. so I assume it would be the reason why some theologians sort the book of John differently.
2.Do you think John 1 and John 21 are part of the original manuscript written by John? How are they different from the rest of the book?
-Yes, because there is no reason found Chapter 1 and 21 don’t belong to the book of John. However, what makes Chapter 1 and 21 look different that the rest of the book is that it looks like John is being mentioned in those particular chapters as a third person.

3.Does John help you believe? How?
-Yes, by reminding me of Jesus’ holy cross and the glory that should be onto Him.
4.The Holy Spirit plays a prominant role in John. Does he play a prominant role in your life?
    – Of course He does, even now.
5.How can the book of John encourage you in your prayer life?
    – Jesus doesn’t ask you too much, but merely my heart.

  6. Kristen Patush says:

1.Why do you think some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory?

The book includes the signs and miracles that Jesus performed, as well as his claims to be God (He is deserving of glory).

2.Do you think John 1 and John 21 are part of the original manuscript written by John? How are they different from the rest of the book?

The first and twenty first chapters are from John’s persepctive. I think they very well could be in the original manuscripts.

3.Does John help you believe? How?

John gives an eye witness account of what he saw, thus, it validates my beliefs in a lot of ways.

4.The Holy Spirit plays a prominant role in John. Does he play a prominant role in your life?

Without the Holy Spirit at work in my life, I would not be able to please God. He (the Holy Spirit) convicts me and causes me to repent, and he gives me a desire to honor and obey God.

5.How can the book of John encourage you in your prayer life?

Following Jesus example of prayer encourages me greatly, Also, the book of john validates my faith in a lot of ways, which causes me to want to praise God more. Thus, I am pulled into longer and more intimate talks with Him!

  7. Melisa Guiles says:

    1. It is often divided this way because the first part of the book focus primarily on seven miracles that Jesus performed. After that, the book takes a turn and begins to recount the passion week. This shows Jesus as He dies, rises from the dead, and is then glorified.
    2. I don’t see any reason why they would not be part of the original manuscripts. John 1 is different because it is more theological and John 21 is different because it seems as if the book should end at the end of Chapter 20, but does not.
    3. John helps me believe because each miracles teaches me something different about who Jesus is. All of these together give a complete picture of Jesus.
    4. The Holy Spirit does play a prominent role in my life. He is the one that illuminates Scripture so that I can understand it. He also helps me make decisions.
    5. It encourages me in my prayer life because I know that Jesus is also praying for me. Even when I don’t know what exactly to prayer for, I know that He knows exactly what I need.

  8. Sokloon Dy says:

    1. It’s called the Book of Signs because it recounts Jesus’ public ministry revealing Himself indirectly as the Son of God. It’s called the Book of Glory because Jesus openly confesses Himself as the Son of God sent by the Father to die and rise again, showing His glory.
    2. I believe that both chapters are a part of the original manuscript. In chapter 1 Jesus is introduced as the Son of God. In chapter 21 the story is closed and given a conclusion concerning the Son of God. So, despite the difference in “person point of view” I believe the manuscripts are a part of the original.
    3. Yes, because he gives an eye witness account of Jesus being revealed as God’s Son in the first chapter. After reading of the miracles that Jesus did, each one pointed to His divinity because no one had ever have the power to forgive sins and to heal at the same time.
    4. Yes, He does. Because without Him, I can do nothing. He is the One that brings me back to God when I sin. He helps to guide and to rescue me when I go through hardships.
    5. It reminds me that I am praying to the living God. The book gives evidence of His love, death, and resurrection. Therefore, when I pray, I know that my prayer is heard. This gives me boldness when I come before the throne of Grace.

  9. Kerri Klingsmith says:

    1. Why do you think some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory?
The first section of John is set up to display miraculous signs that show Jesus as the son of God and the second half Jesus is revealing His redemptive purpose by dying on the cross.
    2. Do you think John 1 and John 21 are part of the original manuscript written by John? How are they different from the rest of the book?
Even though they do seem to be written in a different style, I do believe that they were part of the original manuscript. Authors can write in a contrasting style to cause the audience to reflect and I think that is what John was trying to accomplish there.
    3. Does John help you believe? How?
The book of John does help me to believe. It connects with a sense of wonder and spirituality that the other books don’t possess as much. Poetry is threaded throughout the book and the writing reveals an intimate and personal side of Jesus.
    4. The Holy Spirit plays a prominant role in John. Does he play a prominant role in your life?
I know that I always need more of God in my life but it is a daily goal to have interaction with the Holy Spirit and to allow Him to work in my life. We interact with the Holy Spirit through prayer, devotions and allowing His convicting work to be present in our lives.
    5. How can the book of John encourage you in your prayer life?
It encourages me in my prayer life by showing the beautiful example that Jesus set. Through His High Priestly Prayer, Jesus reveals a beautiful picture of how we can and should talk to God.

  10. Jessica Gentry says:

1.) I think some people divide the book up into the two sections of signs and glory becuase the first part of the book describes the miracles of Jesus, where as the secong part is geared towards the kingdom, and Jesus death and resurrection.
2.) I believe that John chapter 1 and 21 are part of the original manuscripts mainly becuase I don’t find a reason not to. Even though the 1st chapter is a little different, I believe that this is becuase it is the introduction and the conclusion, which therfore serve a different purpose than the rest of the book, but I don’t think their difference makes them illegitimate.
3.) John does help me believe, not only in the sense that I believe in God, but by seeing all that Jesus is able to do I believe more in the sufficiency of God’s grace, power to save, to heal, to restore, and to bless us.
4.) The Holy Spirit does play a prominent role in my life, as He is the one who reminds me of my faith, He allows me to delight in His presence and He is the one who guides me in my decisions and in my walk with the Lord, enlightening me to the scriptures, and teaching me about Himself..
5.) The book of John can encourage me in my prayer life as we see how Jesus prays, and Jesus was the Son of God, and yet He still spoke to the Father through the same method that we have, and I want to take full advantage of that type of communication with the God of the universe. Also, it is a humbling thing to think that Jesus prays for us, and therefore I should be so moved to pray to Him, and for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

  11. aaron wright says:

    1. because the first part is about Jesus’ miracles and the second part of John explains His glory.
    2. I don’t believe so because it talks about John in third person.
    3. Yes, it does because the book of John contains verses that spell out Salvation which is reaffirming.
    4. Yes, He convicts me of sin and prays for me when I don’t know what to say.
    5. It encourages me to think more about what Christ went through in the passion week and what He did for me.

  12. [ED2203-01] HyeJin Lee says:

    1. Why do you think some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory?
    – The reason the theologians divide the book of John into two parts is because that even though the ressurection of Jesus can be considered as one of the miracles,it is more likely to be happened to glorify God.
    2. Do you think John 1 and John 21 are part of the original manuscript written by John? How are they different from the rest of the book?
    – No, John 21 might be added at the end of original manuscript because In John 21 verse 24, it is written that “this is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true” and there’s no reason why he indicates himself as ‘the disciple’ and the speaker indicates himself “We” and indicates John’s testimony as “his testimony”. It is written in third point view rather than first point view. therefore, it is more likely to be written by the third person other than John.

3.Does John help you believe? How?
    – Yes, I was able to be aware of how much God loves me through John 3:16.
4.The Holy Spirit plays a prominant role in John. Does he play a prominant role in your life?
    – Yes, I can feel that Holy Spirit is around me and also guides me to the right way which He wants me to go.
5.How can the book of John encourage you in your prayer life.
    – Through this devotion, I began to know more about Holy Spirit and the importance of studying Bible and meditating on it. and by doing this, i was encouraged to pray more and challanged to study bible more.

  13. Grace Yoo says:

    1. I believe that theologians divided the book of John into into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory because there are about seven different signs/miracles included in the first half of John. While the book of John talks about the miracles that Jesus has done, John also talks about the deity of Christ in the second half.

    2. I am not sure of this question. John 21 is a little odd because it seems like the book should end at John 20. However, the last chapter of John still has a lot of meaning to it and has a lot to say. I also believe that John 1 is probably part of the original manuscripts. It does not flow that well with the rest of the book, but it is still important because it is talking about the Word of God.

    3. Yes, John helps me to believe because it reminds me of what Christ has done for us. It helps me to know that we do not deserve His grace but it was still given to us.

    4. Yes, Holy Spirit does play a prominent role in my life. He is the one that reaffirms my faith and gives me the reason to live for Him.

    5. The Book of John can help me with my prayer life because it is so encouraging to read that Jesus was always praying. He sets a good example for us and how we should live.

1.Why do you think some theologians divide John into the Book of Signs and the Book of Glory?
i am sure about this question. But I think the book of John describes a lot of Jesus’ sign miracles and also His deity.

2.Do you think John 1 and John 21 are part of the original manuscript written by John? How are they different from the rest of the book?
I am not sure about this question either…
I think John 1 and 21 are included author’s firsthand preaching to readers. the other hand the rest of the book describes more facts focused on Jesus’ ministry.

3.Does John help you believe? How?
    yes. as John 20:30-31 says “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (ESV), the book of John helps to understand and believe Jesus Christ.

4.The Holy Spirit plays a prominant role in John. Does he play a prominant role in your life?
Yes. I believe that by the holy spirit I was and am able to live in this life. He is my strength and guard.
